City Appoints Tree Commission |

The Raleigh City Council appointed a 15-member commission January 15, 2002 to study the city's ordinances to develop new regulations on saving trees. Raleigh's present regulations limit tree clearing along thoroughfares and offer incentives to developers who preserve trees. The incentives program apparently hasn't worked, and some developers seem willing to pay fines rather than conform to regulations. The commission includes longtime champions of trees, as well as three members of the city council, a builder, a civil engineer, and educator, and is chaired by landscape architect David Brown. In addition to naming the commission, the council also increased fines for excessive tree pruning. | |
